Amazon FBA VAT in the UAE (the 5%): A Seller's Guide

· LinkSpring

If you sell on amazon.ae, VAT is one of the trickiest parts of your bookkeeping — and one of the easiest to get wrong. This is a plain-English guide to how the 5% works for a UAE Amazon FBA seller: when you have to register, who charges the VAT, how to handle Amazon's fees, and the one quirk that catches almost everyone.

A quick note before we start: this is general information, not tax advice. VAT rules change and your situation is specific — always confirm with your accountant or a registered tax agent.

Do you need to register for VAT?

The UAE has had 5% VAT since 2018. Whether you must register depends on your taxable turnover:

  • Mandatory registration once your taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 over a rolling 12 months (or are expected to in the next 30 days).
  • Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500.

If you're an active FBA seller on amazon.ae, you can cross the mandatory threshold faster than you'd think. Non-resident sellers making taxable supplies in the UAE face different rules again — another reason to confirm your position with a tax professional.

Who charges the VAT on amazon.ae — you or Amazon?

Here's the part US sellers find surprising. On amazon.com, Amazon acts as the marketplace facilitator and handles US sales tax for you. On amazon.ae, for a normal FBA seller, you are the supplier of the goods — so you charge and account for the 5% output VAT on your sales. FBA doesn't shift that responsibility. Amazon is not the deemed supplier for VAT on your goods.

In short: on amazon.ae, the VAT on your sales is yours to report.

Output VAT and input VAT

There are two sides to your VAT:

  • Output VAT — the 5% on your sales. You collect it (it's baked into your prices) and owe it to the FTA.
  • Input VAT — the 5% on Amazon's fees (referral, FBA fulfilment, storage, advertising). Amazon's UAE fee entity issues proper VAT tax invoices, so this input VAT is generally recoverable — you offset it against your output VAT.

Net VAT to pay = output VAT − input VAT. Missing the input VAT on your fees means overpaying — real money left on the table every quarter.

The catch: Amazon doesn't itemise VAT on amazon.ae

This is the quirk that trips up almost every UAE seller. Unlike Europe, Amazon provides no per-transaction VAT report for the UAE. Your settlement report simply shows VAT-inclusive amounts with no VAT line.

So you can't just read the VAT off a report — you have to extract it. Because the amounts already include VAT, you back it out rather than adding it on:

VAT = amount × 5 ÷ 105

You do this on both sides — the 5% inside your sales (output) and the 5% inside Amazon's fees (input). A common, costly mistake is to add 5% instead of extracting it, which inflates your numbers.

Filing your VAT return (the VAT-201)

VAT-registered businesses file the FTA VAT-201 return for each tax period (usually quarterly). You report your total output VAT, your recoverable input VAT, and the net.

Keep Amazon's monthly fee VAT invoices (Seller Central → Tax Document Library) — those are your evidence for reclaiming input VAT.

Common UAE VAT mistakes

  • Not registering once you're over the threshold.
  • Adding 5% instead of extracting it — amazon.ae amounts are VAT-inclusive.
  • Forgetting input VAT on fees — you're overpaying VAT if you skip it.
  • Losing the fee invoices you need as evidence.
  • Mixing marketplaces — a US sale (no VAT) and a UAE sale (5%) shouldn't sit in the same VAT workings.

Make it automatic

Extracting VAT from every settlement by hand — on sales and fees, to the cent — is exactly the kind of repetitive, error-prone task worth automating. LinkSpring reads your amazon.ae settlement, extracts the 5% output VAT on your sales and input VAT on Amazon's fees, posts it correctly to Zoho Books, and gives you a VAT return helper with the exact Output, Input and Net figures for your VAT-201 — all reconciled to your actual payout.

You still confirm the numbers with your accountant, but you skip the spreadsheet.

FAQ

What is the VAT rate on Amazon.ae? 5% — the UAE standard rate.

Does Amazon charge VAT on its seller fees? Yes, 5% on fees like referral, FBA and storage — and for a registered seller that input VAT is generally recoverable against your output VAT.

Do I add 5% or extract it from my settlement? Extract it. Amazon.ae amounts are VAT-inclusive, so VAT = amount × 5 ÷ 105.

Do US Amazon sellers deal with VAT? No. On amazon.com, Amazon collects and remits US sales tax as the facilitator, so there's no VAT to record.
